Bored New Jersey housewife Roberta spends her days reading the personal ads, becoming fascinated by the ongoing correspondence between “Jim” and the mysterious Susan, a free-spirited drifter who appears to live exactly the kind of adventurous life Roberta can only dream about.

When Roberta decides to appear at Jim and Susan's pre-arranged rendezvous in New York City, events take an unexpected turn. A bump on the head and a bout of amnesia lead Roberta to believe that she is Susan, opening the door to a new life filled with confusion, intrigue, laughter and romance.
