In 1920s America, hard-living traveling salesman Elmer Gantry joins forces with tent-revival evangelist Sister Sharon Falconer. Charismatic, persuasive and larger than life, Gantry discovers that his considerable talents as a salesman can find an entirely new audience from the pulpit.

As his new career as a preacher takes off, however, Gantry's womanizing past threatens to catch up with him and destroy everything he has built.
