In 1945, Grace Stewart lives with her two children in a secluded mansion on the island of Jersey. Because of a rare condition that makes her children sensitive to sunlight, the house is kept in near darkness and strict rules govern every aspect of daily life.

After the disappearance of the previous servants, three new employees arrive and strange events begin to unfold. As mysterious noises echo through the house and the children insist that unseen visitors are present, Grace becomes convinced that something supernatural is inhabiting the mansion.
