Produced by East Germany’s DEFA studio, The Sons of Great Bear offers a unique and politically distinctive take on the western genre. Adapted from Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich’s novels, the film follows Tokei-Ihto, a young Dakota warrior who witnesses his father’s murder and is forced to defend his people against ruthless gold hunters.
Starring Gojko Mitić in a breakthrough role, this influential “Red Western” helped establish a whole cycle of DEFA westerns. Presented here for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK from a 2K restoration by the DEFA Foundation.
