Corporate salesman Steve Butler arrives in a struggling rural town with his partner Sue Thomason. Their job is to persuade local landowners to grant their company drilling rights to their properties.

At first, the assignment appears straightforward. With the community hit hard by economic decline, the money being offered seems like badly needed relief. But opposition begins to grow when a respected schoolteacher questions the long-term consequences of the deal.

Steve soon finds himself caught between corporate interests, the future of the community and his own conscience. As the conflict intensifies, he is forced to reconsider both his work and the values he has taken for granted.

Directed by Gus Van Sant, Promised Land is a thoughtful social drama about economic hardship, corporate influence and difficult moral choices.
