In 1937 Shanghai, during a Japanese air raid, a soldier and a young woman meet under a bridge and promise to find each other again when the war ends, even though they do not know each other's names or faces. Ten years later, the woman is a nightclub singer who takes in a naive country girl newly arrived in the city. Meanwhile, a struggling songwriter living upstairs turns out to be the very soldier she met years earlier.
