Former promising boxer Terry Malloy works on the docks, where local mob boss Johnny Friendly rules through fear and intimidation. Terry once agreed to throw a fight at Friendly's request, but his uneasy relationship with the criminal organization changes when a longshoreman is murdered before he can testify against Friendly.
Terry is forced to choose between remaining silent and finally standing up to the system around him. With encouragement from the murdered man's sister Edie and the courageous Father Barry, he begins to question the corruption controlling the waterfront.
